Things seen while riding

I'm preparing for a 200 km, 2-day ride on June 8 and 9, and so far I have done training rides of 50 km and beyond. Yesterday's total distance was 78 km. One thing about planning training rides is that I've mapped out routes to unfamiliar areas of Toronto, trying to stick to off-road bike paths and low-traffic areas. Although sometimes I've found that the trails have been less well established than Google Maps suggests, other times I've encountered some bike infrastructure that is pretty impressive. Yesterday, I rode most of the Finch Hydro Corridor. This is an off-road paved bike trail running for several kilometres on a strip of land dominated by hydro towers (electricity pylons/transmission towers). It may not be very scenic, but it makes for a good continuous ride and there are even dedicated bike crossing signals where it meets roads. The intersection in the photo struck me because three modes of transport meet there: a bike trail, a rail line and a dedicated busway. No car traffic.

Introduction

This is a blog where I will be talking about my preparation for the 2013 Ride to Conquer Cancer, my reasons for participating and thoughts on training and cycling in general.
